Let’s be real—most women who start a Microlocs or Sisterlocks journey are already well-established. They’re mothers. They’re professionals. They’re often north of 30, done with chasing trends, and craving something consistent, beautiful, and liberating.
Historically, styles like Microlocs and Sisterlocks weren’t even marketed to younger crowds. These styles were for the career women, the grown women, the ones who were tired of jumping from braids to weaves to wigs to silk presses… to blowouts that didn’t survive humidity or the Dominican salon’s next-day flop. Microlocs are for the upper echelon of Black haircare.
Let’s call it what it is: This is a luxury decision. This is not a cheap-girl sport. (Shoutout to my good girlfriend Tai who said that about plastic surgery—it applies here, too.) But then hair loss creeps in. And suddenly, what was once a celebration starts to feel like a silent battle. The Truth About Hair Loss (and Locks) Here’s what I tell every client who sits in my chair, nervous about their thinning hair: You deserve to be the happiest, healthiest version of you. And whatever that looks like? That’s what you do. And you do it twice. Sometimes, that version of you includes locked hair. Sometimes, it doesn’t. But let’s start here:If locking your hair makes you feel beautiful, makes you want to show up boldly in your life, apply for the promotion, leave that relationship, or finally look in the mirror and smile…Then this is what you should do for you.
The Hair Isn’t the Problem—Your Confidence Is...
Let’s get something clear: If there’s an underlying health condition, whether it's hormonal, hereditary, or stress-induced, your hair has the risk of breaking whether it’s locked or loose. But that doesn’t mean you’re powerless, and it definitely doesn’t mean you have to let go of the style that makes you feel like you. With Microlocks, we can combine weaker locks to make them stronger; which will avoid excessive tension on the scalp, and be more gentle on the more fragile strands. Remember to use nourishing, lightweight oils and treatments. Most importantly, stay honest with yourselves about what’s going on.
Step 1: Diagnose the Real Issue
If your hair is thinning or breaking and you’re unsure why, the first step is always go see a dermatologist. Let’s find out what’s happening before we blame the style. You don’t need to assume the worst, it could be fixable, but you need real answers before making a decision that could cost you your confidence.
At one point, I struggled with my own edges. Lately, I’ve been researching hair transplants for my temples. Why? Because hair loss runs in my family, and most of our temples have never been full, thick, or even consistent. They grow a little… then slough off… then we start over. And even though my daughters have the thickest, most perfect hairlines (thank you, genetics), my hairline has always been… let’s just say, shy. But guess what? I’m NOT cutting my locs because of that. I’m NOT giving up the style that makes me feel beautiful, powerful, and aligned with the woman I am.
I’m pivoting. I’m making a plan. I’m researching what I need to do to feel better in my body and with my hair. If your temples are thinning or your hairline isn’t as full as it once was... Maybe you’re scared that locking your hair might reveal more than you’re ready to face... I want you to pause. Don’t rush to shave it all off. Don’t assume your journey is over. Instead do these 3 things to stay in alignment with your true self:
1. Get a proper diagnosis
2. Create a haircare strategy with your stylist
3. Do what makes you feel most like YOU
Because at the end of the day, your glow is not about your hairline, it’s about your alignment.
And if you love the way you look in locs and if seeing yourself with those coils brings a smile to your face…Then baby, we’re gonna hold onto those locs for as long as we can.
Final Thoughts: Pivot, Don’t Panic!
Don’t beat yourself up if you’re in a season where your hair is changing. Don’t let fear make decisions that your confidence should be making. You are allowed to pivot. You are allowed to ask questions, get answers, and make empowered choices. And whether you decide to loc, relock, or transplant—it’s your crown. Own it. Let’s build a plan. Let’s stay gentle. And most importantly—let’s keep glowing.
