Should I Spray My Microlocs Every Day?

One of the biggest questions new Microlocs and Sisterlocs wearers ask me is: “Should I spray my hair every day?”
There is a lot of social media advice telling people to spray their locs daily, sometimes with water or rosewater. I want to give you the truth from a professional loctician’s perspective so you can help your hair lock faster, reduce slippage, and stay healthy.
If your goal is to create long-lasting, well-formed Microlocs, this blog will guide you through the best practices.
Why Spraying Your Microlocs Every Day Can Slow Down The Locking Process
When you start your Microlocs or Sisterlocks journey, the goal is simple: help your hair coil, tighten, and lock in place.
But here’s the science behind it:
💧 Water stretches your curl pattern, and works against the locking process
This means every time you wet your hair:
• Your curls loosen
• Your hair hangs instead of shrinking
• Your coils “open up” instead of wrapping around themselves
This constant stretching makes it harder for your Microlocs to stay in formation.
And when curls aren’t staying tight, you get:
• Unraveling
• Slippage
• Slower locking progress
So while water is great for loose natural hair, it works against the locking process when used too often.
What About Rosewater?
Let’s talk about it because the Internet LOVES rosewater.
Rosewater may smell good, but in reality:
🌹 Rosewater still wets your hair, and creates slippage.
It does not speed up locking.
It does not “tighten” Microlocs.
It does not stop slippage.
In fact, using rosewater every day keeps your hair too soft and too wet to lock.
In my professional opinion, rosewater is a “feel-good” treat for your hair, not a daily necessity.
How to Help Your Microlocs Lock Faster (Without Daily Spritzing)
If you want your locs to form quicker and stay uniform, here’s what works:
1. Keep Your Hair Dry Enough to Coil
Not brittle-dry — just dry enough for your hair to:
• shrink
• coil
• wrap around itself
• begin forming a lock
This is how Microlocs mature.
2. Use Protective Styling
Keeping your hair in a style prevents the urge to spray it daily.
Try:
• Braid-outs
• Twist-outs
• Cornrows
• Flexi rods
• Perm rods
These styles:
• Reduce manipulation
• Encourage shrinkage
• Prevent unraveling
• Protect your loc pattern
3. Avoid Daily Water Spritzing
Daily water causes:
• slippage
• frizz
• loss of tension
• delayed locking
Your hair is trying to follow your instructions… but spraying every day sends mixed signals.
4. Care for Your Scalp Without Soaking Your Hair
If you struggle with dandruff or itchiness, you can try:
• Witch Hazel or Sea Breeze
Both clean the scalp without wetting your locs. Use once per week as needed.
5. Use Light Oils — Only When Needed
Heavy oils slow down locking by coating the strands.
Stick to lighter oil options, such as:
• Almond oil
• Coconut oil
• Tea tree oil
Remember to apply sparingly.
STOP Treating Your Locs Like Loose Natural Hair
Loose naturals need moisture every day... Microlocs do not!
When locking you hair, here are a few tips to remember:
• Less water = more shrinkage
• More shrinkage = faster locking
• Faster locking = less unraveling
You are training your hair, and your hair needs consistency, not confusion.
When You Should Wet Your Hair
You only need to wet your Microlocs when:
• You’re styling with rods
• You’re doing a braid-out
• You’re preparing for curls
• You’re shampooing (with braiding + banding)
Outside of that? Let your hair be.
Final Thoughts: What’s Your Vote?
Are you someone who sprays your hair daily because you saw it online or do you agree that keeping your Microlocs on the drier side helps them lock faster?
Do you spray daily or keep it dry?
0%Spray daily because thats what I saw online
0%Keep them on the drier side
